Teaching Ideas
Linking
KEY IDEAS
What are the copyright implications of linking to other web
sites, especially links that bypass those sites' home pages?
MATERIALS
- A word document including a number of links, especially
deep links within web sites.
- Internet accessible computers
- A link to the copyright
law
BACKGROUND
See scenario for Linking/deep
linking.
PROCEDURE
- Put students into groups.
- Provide each group with a list of web sites, including
deep links. Ask them to go to each site, and determine the
following:
- How many links (or levels) are there between the given
link and the home page?
- How many advertisements are missed by using the deep link?
- Is there critical information on the skipped links?
- Which sites are likely protected under copyright law?
- Which are not likely protected?
DISCUSSION
- Discuss links and levels of links with the students. Then
discuss the content changes as deeper links are made, especially
in regard to marketing strategy.
- After the activity, have them share their findings as
a group and discuss them.
ASSESSMENT
Have each student choose one of the sites explored and write
a detailed analysis of the significance of skipping home page
information from both the linker's and the site owner's perspectives.
