Teaching Ideas
Contributory Infringement
KEY IDEAS
Contributory infringement is the willful linking from your
web site to another web site that violates copyright laws.
Web hosts (ISPs) can be held responsible for knowingly hosting
violating materials.
MATERIALS
- Access to online computers
- Predetermined teacher web sites for students to review
for copyright violations.
- Sample policy for ISP intervention of copyright violations
BACKGROUND
See scenario for Contributory
Infringement.
PROCEDURE
- Put students into groups.
- Have students create a process for determining if material
on a web site is copyrighted, if permission is obtained,
and how to respond to known infractions.
- Have them review 5 teaching web sites to determine if
copyright has been infringed upon, and make recommendations
for taking action as if they were the ISP.
IDEAS FOR CLASS DISCUSSION
- Before beginning the assignment, discuss with the students
what the role and responsibility of an ISP are, and talk
about who are some educational ISPs.
- After the assignment, discuss the legal issues in the
scenario.
ASSESSMENT
Assessment should be provided through the product and process
of the review activity. The copyright determination policy
should factor in as well, as should participation in the discussion.
