The Dot Kids Implementation and Efficiency
Act
UPDATE: President Bush signed this
into law on December 4, 2002. More
info. . . .
In light of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision that the Children's
Internet and Privacy Act (CIPA) is unconstitutional to public
libraries (but not school libraries), this new legislation
would establish a new domain name called kids.us. Unlike the
CIPA, which included the use of web content filters to eliminate
inappropriate content (sometimes good and sometimes bad),
the new domain would be inclusive so that libraries could
tap into this information for relative content for children.
The main drawbacks seem to focus on whether this is also a
violation of the First Amendment and whether there is enough
content to supply the demand? |
